Intel, Micron Modify NAND Joint Venture Partnership

by Brian Beeler

Intel and Micron Technology have announced that the companies have agreed to modify their NAND joint venture relationship. The terms include a supply agreement for Micron to provide Intel with NAND flash while Intel is divesting its stake in two wafer factories for $600 million from Micron – half to be paid in cash, the other half to held by Micron for future orders. Micron will take over the assets of the Singapore and Manassas Virginia manufacturing facilities.

IMFT 20nm NAND

Intel isn’t pulling out of IMFT however, they’re simply reducing their capital investment. Intel will still be very much a part of the R&D process as the joint venture develops both current and future NAND technologies. The IMFT joint venture facility in Utah will continue to operate as-is, with Intel and Micron splitting the NAND output 50/50. Utah produces the widely used 20nm NAND found in most manufacturer’s SSDs who don’t own a NAND fab.
