Intel Releases New Xeon E5-4600 v4 For 4 Socket Servers

by Adam Armstrong

Today Intel announced the release of yet another Xeon processor family, the Intel Xeon E5-4600 v4 family. This family is designed specifically for 4 socket servers used in next-gen data centers and cloud deployments. Intel states that servers utilizing these new processors can now have up to 22 cores and 44 threads for enough processing power for most scale-out and large workloads.

As with all of the new processor families Intel has been release over the last few months, users can expect to see significant performance improvement over previous generations (Intel is claiming 2.6x in similar servers with the older processors). Along with the performance boost and the higher core and thread count, the new E5-4600 v4 family can provide up to 55MB of last-level cache, support up to 6TB of DDR4 2400 memory, and 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0. These new capabilities should allow customers to tackle complex workloads with faster application response times all on fewer servers.

The main thing that comes to mind with new processors is the above, more and better performance. While Intel states that they can deliver the expected performance they take the new family one step further and also deliver a more secure solution and a more efficient solution. The new processors have AES encryption and fast public key (RSA) encryption along with a strong random number generation that enables hardened, pervasive data protection without impact to application response times. While security is a concern for modern data centers so is power consumption. Intel uses its Intelligent Power technology to dynamically optimize power across both the CPU and memory. The latest version of processors family supports per-core P states (PCPS) to optimize the power usage of each processor core.

Key features include:

  • Advanced multi-core, multi-threaded processing: Up to 22 cores (previously up to 18) and 44 threads (previously up to 36) per socket for running more and heavier workloads and higher density of VMs per server
  • Larger cache: Up to 55MB (Previously up to 45MB) of last level cache for fast access to frequently used data
  • Faster memory: Up to 48 DIMMS per four-socket server for memory-intensive applications and faster maximum memory speeds with DDR4 memory (2400 versus 2133 MHz)
  • Higher performance for demanding workloads
    • Optimized Intel Advanced Vector Extensions 2.0 (Intel AVX 2.0) enables applications to run at maximum “turbo” frequencies wherever possible across workloads
    • Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 acceleration takes advantage of power and thermal headroom
  • Flexible, high-performance hardware-enhanced virtualization: Improve overall reliability and responsiveness through new Intel Virtualization Technology features, including New Posted Interrupts, Page Modi cation Logging, and VM Enter/Exit latency reduction
  • Advanced RAS features: Multiple rank sparing DDR4 recovery for command and address parity errors
  • Intel Data Protection Technology with:
    • Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) and RSA public key encryption for pervasive data encryption without sacri cing application response times
    • Secure Key for high-quality encryption keys that provide better protection against sophisticated side channel attacks (e.g., side channel penetration)
  • Intel Platform Protection Technology with:
    • Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) for establishing trusted infrastructure that can only launch into known good states
    • OS Guard and BIOS Guard for stronger platform-level security
