ioSafe has released a new rugged external hard drive, this time a 2.5" portable model. The Rugged Portable comes in an aluminum case with either an HDD or SSD inside. If you need a little more physical security, there’s also an SSD version with titanium case. All of the Rugged Portable drives feature data recovery services and a host of military spec features.

ioSafe Rugged Portable

All of the Rugged Portable models are USB 3.0 compatible, with a FireWire options coming in March 2011. The hard drive versions are available in 250GB to 1TB capacities; the SSD equipped units in 256GB or 512GB capacities.

As with other ioSafe products, these drives are engineered for a surprising amount of physical abuse. Starting with the drive case, it’s CNC-machined from a solid block; the aluminum enclosure is crush-resistant to 2,500 lbs. and the titanium alloy enclosure to 5,000 lbs. Full Suspension Drive Technology protects data during drops of up to 20’ for the SSD and 10’ for the hard drive onto concrete.

If it’s not drops you fear, HydroSafe Technology protects data during immersion up to 3 days in freshwater or saltwater to a depth of 10’ (aluminum version) or 30’ (SSD or titanium version). And that’s not just the drive dunked in water by itself, the unit continues to be water resistant even when connected via USB or FireWire.

The list goes on; ChemSafe protects data during periods of immersion in diesel fuel, oils, hydraulic fluids and aircraft fuels to a 12” depth for 1 hour, EnviroSafe protects data from continuous exposure to UV, blowing sand, blowing dust, rain, salt fog, icing or freezing rain for up 24 hours and AltiSafe enables operation at altitudes up to 15,000 ft. (aluminum version) and 30,000 feet (SSD and titanium versions).

ioSafe hits military spec after spec throughout their feature list, meaning these drives will probably handle the most harsh environments on Earth, or at least those in Iraq and Afganistan – they’ll likely hold up to the tortures of a road warrior’s gear bag too. Should something go bad, ioSafe incudes $2,500 of data recovery services for the HDD model and $5,000 for the SSD. The included warranty and protection service is good for one year, with extended programs available.

Pricing and Availability

Prices start at $149.99 for the 250 GB aluminum HDD version and range up to $3,499 for the titanium 512GB SSD model. The Rugged Portable is available for pre-order now.
