LaCie has announced the latest addition to the d2 desktop storage line, featuring a new all-aluminum unibody enclosure, dual Thunderbolt 2, and USB 3.0. The new LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 2 is designed to be upgradable to the fastest SSD solution on the market, which boasts speeds upwards of 1150 MB/s.

The new LaCie d2 combines the latest interfaces as well as a Seagate 6 TB 7200 RPM professional hard disk for up to 220 MB/s in transfer rates. This focus on high performance and capacity make the LaCie d2 an ideal solution for storing large files and archiving projects. In addition, the dual Thunderbolt 2 ports allow users to daisy chain up to six devices to a single Thunderbolt port on a computer. To multiply speeds by five times, users can install the LaCie d2 SSD Upgrade (which is sold separately) to add 128GB of PCIe SSD storage and increase throughput up to 1150 MB/s. LaCie has made it easy to use the upgrade kit, with users simply having to remove the rear panel and installing the upgrade.

Two separate drives mount on the computer: one for the SSD and one for the hard disk. The SSD is used for bandwidth-intensive tasks, such as fast file transfers, audio mixing, video editing, or OS booting, while the hard disk is used for file archiving.

The rugged all-aluminum unibody enclosure is forged from a single sheet of aluminum, providing long-term durability. In addition, the enclosure draws heat away from the hard disk, which allows for a fan-free cooling design. The integrated base extends the surface area for even more space for heat dissipation. Its cushioning base and vibration-absorbing hard disk mounts significantly reduces vibration while its integrated cable lock prevents accidental disconnection of interface or power cables.

The updated LaCie d2 also includes everything needed for secure backup due to its bundled professional backup software suite as well as compatibility with Time Machine and Windows Backup. The device also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which prevents unwanted access by password-protecting volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.
