by Lyle Smith

LaCie has announced that its popular desktop hard drive, the d2, now features USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectivity and new 4TB 7200rpm hard drives. The d2 boasts speeds up to 180MB/s, which is about twice as fast as FireWire 800 and almost four times faster than USB 2.0. This performance enhancement allows users to transfer and back up large amounts of data very quickly as well as the ability to easily edit videos without delay using resource heavy applications. Its 256-bit AES encryption also ensures that the data is secure.

With its USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces, the LaCie d2 is now an attractive option for new Mac or Ultrabook users. The d2 also has USB 2.0 backward compatibility, enabling users to connect the product to any standard computer. LaCie’s new d2 also features a solid aluminum casing, which provides 60 percent more surface area than flat designs. As a result, this diverts and dissipates heat more efficiently without requiring a fan, making it a viable option for noise-sensitive environments.

Pricing and Availability

The LaCie d2 is available with a full back-up software suite in 3TB and 4TB capacities. The starting price is $299.00 USD and includes both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cables with the purchase.
