Lenovo and EMC Joint Venture Completed

by Lyle Smith

Lenovo and EMC Corporation have announced they have completed the formation of LenovoEMC Ltd, which was previously announced in August 2012, in addition to a wider strategic partnership in industry standard servers and networked storage solutions. The deal will bring co-branded NAS solutions to distributed enterprise, remote branches, and small and medium businesses all the while incorporating the core assets of EMC’s Iomega business. This joint venture is a significant step for Lenovo as prior to this deal they had no branded storage options. Rather than buying a SAN/NAS company, Lenovo went straight into the storage business with what amounts to be basically a lighter version of EMC’s enterprise storage portfolio.

The Iomega networked storage portfolio includes desktop, tower, and rackmount array products in capacities ranging from diskless versions all the way up to 48TB. Iomega NAS solutions include the EMC LifeLine OS, which combines useful features and benefits with an ease-of-use specifically made for small business users, remote enterprise offices, departmental data centers, and others.

The partnership between Lenovo and EMC Corporation also includes an x86 server technology development program in addition to an OEM and reseller relationship for EMC’s storage solutions.

While EMC and Lenovo are both shareholders of LenovoEMC Ltd, Lenovo holds the majority interest.
