Lenovo has announced the newest generation of the powerful and highly successful ThinkStation P620 desktop professional workstation. The last-gen P620 was the best Threadripper professional platform we’ve ever seen, so those looking for another iteration (us included) will certainly be excited about this release. This single-socket platform features the newest AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000WX Series processor, indicating upwards of 25% performance improvement over the previous generation.
Creators, architects, engineers, and designers will all find a lot to love here, as the next-gen CPU clock speeds (which reach up to 4.5GHz) will allow them to more effectively render during professional applications while 3D visualizations and simulations will be able to run seamlessly in real-time. Those swapping out their CPU for the new one will simply need to complete a BIOS update.
With this release, Lenovo will also be offering the P620 in a new 24-core CPU option. The 16 and 32 core builds were the most popular among users, so AMD decided to add another CPU to split the difference. This means more configuration options and flexibility for organizations.
Other improvements over the previous generation include double L3 cache directly accessible per core, 10GbE built-in Ethernet, and Windows 11 support.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000WX Series
The AMD Ryzen 5000 Series of desktop processors uses the Zen 3 architecture, featuring end-to-end design enhancements, energy efficiency, and reduced latencies over the previous generation. This re-design includes more flexible execution resources, a lot more load/store bandwidth, higher clock speeds, and a streamlined front-end for more threads in flight. Needless to say, this will give the already impressive P620 desktop workstation an even greater edge against its competition. Though there are noticeable performance gains with the “Zen 3” architecture, power consumption and TDP remain the same.
Here is a rundown of the clock speed differentials between the two generations of CPUs used inside the P620:
