by Brian Beeler

LSI has reported their first quarter of 2012 which ended in March with revenues of $622 million, which was up 19% over the prior quarter and 30% year over year and 78% of the revenue was provided by the server and storage semiconductors business. Revenue growth was driven by three main factors; continual recovery of the hard drive sector, better than expected strength in SandForce sales and growth in their networking business units. LSI went on to highlight the SandForce wins with Intel and SanDisk, along with PCIe application accelerator and software wins with Oracle and IBM.

Other Quarter Highlights from the Storage Divisions:

  • Flash controller revenues were above expectations, topping $25 million in revenue. LSI believes SandForce controllers will be the market share leader in 2012 due in large part to OEM design and testing support, along with support for all six major NAND manufacturers.
  • SandForce had 17 SSD model wins in the quarter, highlighted by the Intel SSD 520 and SSD 330
  • LSI is enthusiastic about their new Nytro line of application acceleration products, highlighted by the Nytro WarpDrive.
  • Major Nytro wins in the quarter include deals with IBM and Oracle.
  • LSI 6Gb SAS and MegaRAID solutions are going to power over 200 new server models based on the Intel Romley platform.
  • LSI is also pushing ahead with 12Gb SAS designs, with two top-tier server OEM wins. LSI estimates they’re six months ahead of the competition with this technology.
  • Q1 set a new record of SoC shipments to their largest customer in the hard drive space. LSi expects further growth in the current quarter as the HDD industry continues its recovery.
