At IDF LSI was teasing their next generation WarpDrive technology in an effort to stake claim to the top spot in the increasingly competitive enterprise PCIe SSD space. The original WarpDrive SLP-300 was the first enterprise PCIe SSD to hit our test bench, but it’s since been followed by the Fusion-io ioDrive Duo and OCZ has recently announced the competing Z-Drive R4. LSI isn’t taking the increased competition lightly though, the WarpDrive 2 LP has a new look and leverages six SandForce SF-2200 processors to deliver great performance at deep queue depths.

While LSI hasn’t made an official announcement yet, we expect the new WarpDrive 2 to come in several flavors including MLC versions at capacities of 1.2TB and 1.6TB. With so many enterprise PCIe SSD solutions available, LSI does have a unique differentiator, their deep experience in RAID technology and firmware. LSI is banking that their knowhow will give them a big edge when the WarpDrive 2 hits the market around the first quarter of 2012.
