Many 2011 MacBook Pro users have been struggling with using the latest high-speed SATA 6 Gb/s SSDs since the hardware update many months ago. The issues largely affected the 17″ model, but owners of the 15″ and 13″ MacBook Pros also complained of “beachballing,” poor performance and even failure to recognize SATA 6Gb/s SSDs. Apple has issued the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 this morning, which appears to resolve the problem.

It’s not all perfect though, according to OWC there are still issues with SSDs that are being used in the optical bay. “For those with a MacBook Pro 15″ or 17″ model that has SATA 3.0 6Gb/s link capability reported, it is very important to note that this EFI update does not appear to have resolved reliability of using a 6Gb/s drive in the optical bay.”
Oddly the Apple support page doesn’t mention SATA 6 Gb/s compatibility issues being resolved, it’s limited to comments about Lion recovery and Thunderbolt display issues. At the end of the day though, users who have been struggling with their MacBook Pro and a new high-performance SSD can hopefully breath a sigh of relief.
