Mellanox is announcing their SwitchX-2 based SX1012 Ethernet switch which delivers 12 ports of 40GbE for small-scale, high performance computing. The SX1012 also has the industry’s smallest footprint with two SX1012 models fitting into 1U of a standard rack. Each of the 12 ports can be configured to deliver as much as 56GbE line rate to increase the performance of the switch. Additionally, the ports can each be split into four standalone 10GbE interfaces. The SX1012 is based on Mellanox’s VPI technology and can run the full capabilities of MLNX-OS. This enables the switch to operate in mutual Ethernet and InfiniBand environments to meet a variety of applications.

The SX1012’s capability to split its 40GbE ports each into four 10GbE makes it ideal for top-of-rack (ToR) implementation. Each QSFP port can be used with a passive breakout cable to create those four SFP+ interfaces which enables administrators to expand the ports from 12 to as many as 48 ports. The SX1012 also features a range of management options which includes support for Mellanox’s Unified Fabric Manager. One further enhancement is that the SX1012 is available as reverse or forward airflow which makes placing the switch a lot easier since data centers’ power and thermal needs vary. Status LEDs for fans and power supplies have been placed on both sides to make the switch easy maintain regardless of placement.
SX1012 Availability
The SX1012 will enter GA in August 2013.
