Micron 7450 SSD Announced

by Lyle Smith
Micron 7450

Micron has announced the 7450 SSD. This is a PCIe Gen4 drive purpose-built for flexible cloud and data centers applications, supporting a range of mainstream workloads, including cloud and object storage, SQL and NoSQL databases, block and object stores, VDI, and server virtualization. Micron indicates that the combination of its in-house 176-layer NAND (high layer count with the company’s CMOS-under-array technology) and the Gen4 interface make the 7450 a faster booting drive with improved application response times.

Micron 7450 Form Factors and Capacities

In Micron’s view, one of the biggest draws of the Micron 7450 is the sheer range of available capacities (from 400GB to 15.36TB) and form factors, allowing it to meet virtually any storage, power, and thermal use case. Available form factors are comprised of U.3 (7mm and 15mm), E1.S (5.9mm, 15mm, and 25mm), and M.2 (22x80mm and 22x110mm). Among the available model is the industry’s only PCIe Gen4 U.3 SSD that is offered in both 15mm and 7mm as well as a 7.68TB E1.S option.

To be fair though, most of these form factors will be sold exclusively to a handful of hyperscale customers; most of Micron’s competitors do the same. So while it’s fun to list off a bunch of shapes and sizes, Micron’s packaging of the drives isn’t as special as they’d lead us to believe. They’ve also opted to neglect E3.S, which is interesting, as it’s one of HPE’s leading nextgen form factor candidates.

Micron 7450 Performance

Organizations will also be able to customize their deployments further, as the Micron 7450 offers a comprehensive range of performance profiles. The U.3 form factor is quoted to deliver up to 6.8GB/s read (for all capacities) and up to 5.6GB/s write (for 7.68TB and 15.36TB models) in sequential performance, while random reads and writes have a potential to reach 1 million IOPS and 410,000 IOPS, respectively, with the highest capacity MAX model.

We see similar performance for the E1.S form factor, boasting up to 6.8GB/s read and 5.6GB/s write in sequential speeds, while random performance is expected to reach up to 1 million read and 400K write for the MAX model. The M.2 performance profile is quoted to deliver sequential reads and write up to 5GB/s and 2.5GB/s, respectively, while hitting up to 735,000 IOPS read and 300,000 IOPS write in random performance.

Micron 7450 Security Features

The Micron7459 features the company’s unique Secure Execution Environment, self-encrypting drives (SEDs), and Microsoft eDrive options. This will allow organizations to base their deployments on their security their specific requirements.

Here’s a detailed rundown of the Security features:

Micron 7450 SSD Feature Benefit
Secure Execution Environment Includes dedicated, isolated security processing hardware for security-related functions. Physical isolation helps protect against attacks.
Security Flexibility SED and non-SED options available to help meet varied security deployment options.
Industry Standard Security TCG Opal 2.01 and IEEE 1667 options available; FIPS 140-3 Level 2 certification eases adoption to existing security deployments.
Asymmetric Roots of Trust Easily revoke previously authenticated root keys (in immutable ROM) to meet changing needs.
Strong Asymmetric Key Support Uses standard, National Institute of Standards and technology (NIST)-approved algorithms with 208- bit/3072-bit RSA keys for standardized, strong key support.
RSA Delegation Key Support Enables customers to maintain ownership of RSA keys, helping keep ownership within customer boundaries.
Secure Boot Helps ensure firmware integrity on a running platform and defends against malware.
Key-Based Firmware Update Validates firmware using public key-based authentication prior to firmware update (malware protection).
Key-Based Privileged Access Helps protect against unauthorized privileged SSD function execution with public key-based authorization. Helps guard against unauthorized changes.

Final Thoughts

Historically Micron has been very shy about having their drives reviewed. This makes sense because prior to the 7400 Pro, their recent drives were rebadged Memblaze SSDs. Hopefully though, even though the controller tech isn’t disclosed, Micron is back in the SSD innovation business. That would be a pleasant surprise considering the company for many years has been all about the NAND fab and less about packaged SSDs.
