Micron has announced their next-generation client-class M600 SATA SSD, which offers low-power, high-performance storage for personal computers. The M600 is specifically designed to leverage Micron’s NAND Flash technology to addresses the storage demands of modern mobile computing applications, such as Ultrabook platforms and tablets, as well as performance-oriented PC desktops and video capture systems. The M600 also offers class-leading SSD power efficiency consuming less than 2 milliwatts (mW) in sleep mode and averages 150mW during active use.

The M600 is specifically designed to leverage Micron’s NAND Flash technology to addresses the storage demands of modern mobile computing applications, such as Ultrabook platforms and tablets, as well as performance-oriented PC desktops and video capture systems. The M600 also offers class-leading SSD power efficiency consuming less than 2 milliwatts (mW) in sleep mode and averages 150mW during active use.
The M600 can read data as fast as the SATA interface allows, with random reads up to 100,000 IOPS and up to 560MB/s for sequential read speeds in all capacities. In addition, Micron states that the M600 will fair very well with write performance due to their dynamic write acceleration. Instead of sacrificing user capacity for a permanent cache, this technology switches NAND cells to behave like higher-grade Flash (from MLC to SLC), which creates a cache that is sized according to drive demands. As a result, this reduces power consumption and improves write performance by up to 2.8 times over non-cached systems; this helps to ensure that the lower-capacity M600 SSDs are able to post good write speeds. This also helps the M600 to have greater longevity.
The M600 is equipped with self-encryption technology that is designed to meet government requirements and to make sure that valuable mobile data is secure even in when stolen or lost. The M600 uses the AES-256-bit hardware encryption engine so that it can actively encrypt data without a loss in performance while complying with the TCG Opal 2.0 standards and the Microsoft eDrive protocol. This makes it easy to enable using management tools or within Windows 8.
The M600 uses Micron’s 16nm process technology, which their most advanced Flash technology. In addition, the drive features a various quality and reliability features including RAIN onboard fail-over protection, client-class power-loss protection for data at rest, and adaptive thermal monitoring, which dynamically adjusts power consumption based on system temperature.
The M600 SSD uses Micron’s 128Gb NAND to enable a wide range of capacities in tiny configurations and is offered in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB mSATA and M.2 module configurations. The M.2 module is offered in both 80mm and 60mm versions (2280 and 2260), allowing it to fit in ultra-slim tablet systems. The M600 is also available in a 2.5-inch, 7mm form factor, which is available in capacities from 128GB to 1TB.
