Today Micron Technology Inc. announced its new encryption-enhanced SSD designed for read-centric data center workloads, the Micron M510DC. The M510DC, that will be sold along with the M500DC (it is not a replacement for it), is designed to help datacenters ease the transition from HDDs to proven, reliable flash drives. The M510DC also comes with a suite of firmware data protection features with the market’s first true TCG Enterprise-level data encryption for SSDs.

The M510DC also comes with a suite of firmware data protection features with the market’s first true TCG Enterprise-level data encryption for SSDs.
The M510DC is a balance of performance, security, enterprise reliability, power, and cost. It is ideal for cloud and Web 2.0 storage content delivery networks that are looking for better response times and faster decisions in big data analytics. Micron has been able to reduce costs, which makes the M510DC more appealing to customers that had avoided SSDs for budgetary reasons in the past. One of the methods of reducing costs was analyzing how many drive fills per day the modern data center uses. Forward Insights found that two-thirds of data centers require 1 drive fill per day or less presenting a large opportunity for drives such as the M510DC.
The M510DC was built off of proven technology, Micron's 16nm NAND technology. It features Micron’s eXtended Performance and Enhanced Reliability Technology (XPERT) architecture. The SSD has full power-loss protection and is the first TCG Enterprise encryption to protect data at rest. Micron reports that early adopters are reporting immediate return on investment after deploying Micron’s M510DC SSD.
