NetApp Announces New EF550 Flash Array and E2700 Arrays, Updated E5500 Array

by Mark Kidd

NetApp has announced two new storage platforms and updated a third, reflecting NetApp’s strategy of serving a broad spectrum of flash-accelerated enterprise storage clients and use cases via the EF-Series of all-flash storage arrays and the E-Series of SAN arrays. The new NetApp EF550 flash array is designed for latency-sensitive data, while the E2700 array will emphasize price/performance ratio for small, remote, and branch offices. Updates for the NetApp 5500 SAN array improve performance, density, and modular flexibility for data-intensive workloads.

According to the company, the all-flash NetApp EF550 delivers consistent submillisecond response times in order to accelerate latency-sensitive applications such as database, VDI, and web services. EF550 offers a scale-up architecture that reduces latency alongside remote replication to ensure that critical applications can be protected at a remote site. The EF550 is specified for throughput above 400K IOPS and offers more than 12GB/s of bandwidth. Standard for its product line, the EF550 also incorporates NetApp storage management with tuning functions, monitoring and diagnostics with proactive repair, and sub-second snapshot copies for backup and recovery.

E-Series SAN storage arrays implement NetApp technology for Dynamic Disk Pools, SSD Cache tiering, the NetApp AutoSupport tool, remote replication, and with this announcement, 12G SAS connectivity. The new E2700 introduces 12G SAS to the E-Series linup, while also featuring FC and iSCSI connectivity so that administrators can intermix SSD, SAS, and NL-SAS drives in a dense, 60-drive 4U rack enclosure that supports 4TB drives.

The updated E5500 features NetApp’s SANtricity enterprise data protection software along with NetApp AutoSupport for monitoring and installed-base analytics for proactive operations. The E5500’s interface options include 10G iSCSI, 16G FC, SAS, and IB, allowing the E5500 to scale up to 1.5PB per system with a hybrid array of SSD, SAS, and NL-SAS drives.

These product announcements reflect NetApp’s overall strategy to provide comprehensive cloud integration via the NetApp ONTAP operating system. In addition to private cloud implementations, NetApp’s public cloud service client portfolio now includes more than 175 public cloud services providers.
