NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced a new verified architecture for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on NetApp HCI, updates to Trident, its automated provisioner solving the persistent storage challenge for containers, as well as enhanced flexibility for DevOps on both NetApp Cloud Volumes for Google Cloud Platform and NetApp Cloud Volumes for AWS.
NetApp's new verified architecture for Red Hat OpenShiftContainer Platform on NetApp HCI will give customers more options for adding Linux racks to their operations and reduce risks. Red Hat OpenShift has steadily gained features and deployment tools that allow high availability at the control plane, hypervisor, and storage tiers. OpenShift runs Kubernetes which ties in nicely with NetApp's recent increase in support for Kubernetes on Trident.
Trident, the NetApp automated storage provisioner for Docker, Kubernetes, and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, is adding support for NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP. NetApp Kubernetes Service comes as a result of NetApp’s recent acquisition of StackPointCloud, an advanced Kubernetes-as-a-Service platform that directly supports the application orchestration capabilities across clouds. This gives Trident a universal control plane for Managed Kubernetes, which simplifies the deployment of a Kubernetes cluster to the cloud. Going forward, Trident will support backup and restore using NetApp Snapshot copies and offer multicloud support.
NetApp Cloud Volumes for Google Cloud Platform is a no-ops service with a truly native experience, including support from Google, as well as Google Cloud UI for provisioning and management. We briefly covered this service when it was introduced just a few months ago. It supports moving analytics to the cloud to speed processing and provide redundancy and multi-environment testing. NetApp has expanded availability for this program for the Ashburn and Iowa regions in the United States. They also announced that their Google Cloud Platform is now accepting production-level data.
NetApp Cloud Volumes for AWS provides secure and proven NFS and SMB data management services for AWS. Cloud Volumes for AWS is available today from NetApp and NetApp partners soon to be listed on AWS Marketplace and with expanded availability to international markets. NetApp's AWS Cloud Volumes offers:
- Enhanced flexibility for DevOps with REST API support and preview for Cloud Backup service.
- Data lakes with multiple data sources and simultaneous multiapplication data sharing
- Eliminates the need to rearchitect file-based applications for the cloud; they can simply be moved to the cloud without development cycles.
- Expanded availability in regions across APAC and EMEA, including Sydney, Tokyo, Dublin, Frankfurt, and London.
