Today NETGEAR Inc. announced today the release of its newest version of the ReadyNAS OS, version 6.2. The new version of the OS is for both desktop and rack-mount NAS devices. ReadyNAS OS 6.2 continues on NETGEAR’s mission to “provide the strongest data protection in the industry.” While ReadyNAS OS already had auto RAID, unlimited snapshots, real time anti-virus, and cloud-managed replication for data protection, the 6.2 version adds Bitrot protection as a key new feature. Storage media gradually decays over time. With Bitrot, NETGEAR can automatically detect and correct data corruption due to media degradation on the redundant RAID volumes. Bitrot can be enabled at the per Share level.

The free firmware release is compatible with all ReadyNAS 6.x devices and can be upgraded within the admin GUI. In addition to the Bitrot protection, the UI and key interface methods have been updated. The ReadyCLOUD portal and mobile app updates have been refreshed (iOS and Android updates are available at their respective stores). At its core, ReadyCLOUD users have 100% cloud-based setup without requiring a software download to configure the system out of the box. Users enjoy the same unified web interface when they access their ReadyNAS wherever they are, with full data management capabilities.
A new ReadyCLOUD desktop app replaces the ReadyNAS Remote desktop apps, increasing the ease at syncing data across multiple devices. Automatic folder backup and sync allows users to select any folder on the NAS as a sync folder to PCs, a first in the NAS market. File sharing has also been enhanced; users can share files on their NAS by simply sending a ReadyNAS link which is ideal for sharing large files. Netgear has also added private folders for multi-user Apple Time Machine environments, also a first for a NAS device.

ReadyNAS OS 6.2 is available now and can be downloaded for free through users’ GUI on the NAS device or through Netgear's website.
