Comtrade Software Provides Deeper Application & Hypervisor Support
Comtrade Software has added support for ESX as well as deeper application support for Microsoft Exchange and SQL to its data protection solution for the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform, HYCU. They have also added disaster recovery and backup for Remote Office Back Office (ROBO) environments, along with blueprints for Nutanix Calm Marketplace and beta for Acropolis File Services (AFS). Benefits include:
- Simple, Efficient, Intelligent Data Protection for ESX. Designed to be hypervisor agnostic, now customers gain the same interface and look and feel if they are using AHV or ESX. HYCU also provides VM level context with Nutanix storage level snapshots, avoiding issues with I/O latency like VM stun where the VM becomes unresponsive (stunned) because of the underlying data protection process. HYCU alleviates this by providing little to no impact on production. By using the storage level snapshot, HYCU has fewer limitations than legacy backup and recovery providers.
- More efficient backup recovery combined with DR for Remote Office Back Office environments: Customers who need DR, setup standard Nutanix Protection Domains for the VMs and Apps they care about in the remote site and the data gets replicated and will be DR ready. For more efficient data protection, HYCU uses the DR copy to create the backups. In addition, HYCU will allow recovery to the original source when there is a need.
- First blueprint for Nutanix Marketplace. HYCU is now available for Nutanix customers on the Calm Marketplace. Customers looking for data protection can now simply click to add HYCU to their environments. Calm helps orchestrate the provisioning, scaling, and management of applications for a true app-centric experience.
- Early Trials for AFS Backup and Recovery: Nutanix Acropolis Filesystem (AFS) AFS users gain the first purpose-built data protection support for impact-free, agentless file backup. HYCU leverages the scale out function of AFS and does the backups in parallel. Even the first full backup can be completely parallelized by the number of nodes the customer has in their system. the same data is spread over five nodes in the AFS cluster, with HYCU, a full data backup can be parallelized and completed in a fraction of the time.
- Deeper Application Coverage: For Microsoft Exchange. IT administrators gain discovery and consistent backup of single server MS Exchange environments as well as mailbox level recovery. For Microsoft SQL, customers gain the ability to restore databases to a different MS SQL Server as well as cloning to support best practice DR support.

Overland-Tandberg Announced Its LTO-8 Media
Overland-Tandberg announced the availability of its NEO series of LTO-8 tape media. Highlights include:
- LTO-8 offers a compressed storage capacity of 30TB (12TB native) using a 2.5:1 ratio, and a compressed transfer rate of 750 MB/sec. (360MB/sec. native)
- LTO-8 tape, like LTO-7, supports LTFS, WORM (Write Once Read Many) and AES 256-bit hardware encryption

Cavium Contributes ThunderX2 Motherboard Spec To OCP
Cavium announced that it working with Microsoft to contribute the ThunderX2 motherboard, Cavium’s second generation 64-bit ARMv8-A server processor SoCs for Data Center, specification to the Open Compute Project (OCP). According to the two companies this contribution will enable the adoption and iteration by members of OCP, a global community of technology leaders who are reimagining hardware to make it more efficient, flexible, and scalable.
DDN & HPE Partner On HPC Platforms
DataDirect Networks (DDN) announced that it was entering a strategic partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to integrate DDN’s parallel file system storage and flash storage cache technology with HPE’s HPC platforms. Through this partnership the two companies will integrate DDN’s EXAScaler and GRIDScaler parallel file systems solutions, and the latest release of IME, a software defined scale out NVMe data caching solution, with HPE’s servers and DMF software. This partnership aims to accelerate and simplify customers’ workflows in technical computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning environments.
Druva Announces Next-Gen Data Protection For AWS
Druva announced its new service delivered via the Druva Cloud Platform that enables data management for IaaS and PaaS cloud workloads on a single policy control plane, Druva Apollo. Apollo will enable user to protect, govern and provide insights to data that resides within Amazon Web Services (AWS), including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS). Druva Apollo is expected to be available in the first half of 2018.

HPE Introduces Its Extreme Edge Research Initiative
In August, HPE launched a HPC onto the International Space Station, via SpaceX. Now the company has launched its Extreme Edge Research initiative to tackle the issue of collect data at the edge, in this case space. With an extreme edge in space, HPE will be able to take lessons learned and apply it to the edge here on Earth.
