Nutanix announced its vision for a hybrid multicloud Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), letting developers write applications once and run them anywhere. Project Beacon is a multi-year program to deliver a portfolio of data-centric PaaS-level services available natively anywhere.
Enterprise Cloud Index reported 75 percent of IT teams expect to leverage more than one IT infrastructure, including public cloud, on-premises, or edge, over the next three years. Currently, moving applications to different environments is only possible at the infrastructure layer. PaaS services that allow developers to build and ship applications faster can cause lock-in to specific public clouds. Moving applications to a more suitable environment results in high switching costs.
Project Beacon aims to change that with a suite of data-centric platform services characterized by a simple and consistent management experience with automated mobility, portable licensing, developer self-service, built-in security, and governance for cloud operations teams. Nutanix plans to deliver these platform services, relied upon by many organizations, with a single API and console, and integrated with Kubernetes container orchestration.
First Up, Database Services
The first service Nutanix plans to roll out will be database services, the foundation of all apps. Nutanix will extend the customer benefits of the Nutanix Database Service (NDB) solution as a managed service in the public cloud. This will build on the NDB database automation and management experience currently available on Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) as a managed service on native public cloud infrastructure.
Nutanix will expand from there, introducing popular data-centric platform services, such as streaming, caching, and search. The goal for Project Beacon is to deliver all key elements needed to build modern applications so that developers while avoiding lock-in to a single infrastructure.
