NVIDIA And VMware Deliver Scalable Rich Graphics Applications To Remote Desktops

by Adam Armstrong

Since VMware released their new vSphere 6 with its new features, we have mentioned Dell and HP's support for vSphere 6. Now NVIDIA announced that NVIDIA GRID vGPU has been introduced to VMware Horizon 6 built on vSphere 6. NVIDIA GRID vGPU on VMware Horizon 6 will enable customers to run the most advanced, graphics-rich applications in remote desktops. This partnership will bring workstation-class performance to remote and mobile workers.

Under NVIDIA and VMware's early access program, the two companies have been able to work with over 300 customers in the past five months. Some of the customers worked with include: Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Denso, Nifco Siemens, AECOM, CH2MHILL, Populous, STV, Inc., Raytheon, and the University of Southern California and the Villanova University. The feedback from the early access companies has been enhanced desktop virtualization with immersive graphics, greater security for mission-critical data, scalable performance, and cost-effectiveness.

The four main points of NVIDIA GRID vGPU on VMware Horizon 6 are:

  • Scalability – customers can add 3D graphics workstations (up to 16 to 32 users per GRID board) in a cost-effective way through Virtual SAN's high-performance, scale-out storage.
  • Productivity – with the large data sets being on centralized storage, data loads faster, models rotate more quickly, and work can be done remotely, all increasing user productivity.
  • Collaboration – as with the above, work can be loaded faster, with access from anywhere, allowing greater collaboration regardless of where the branch office or particular team happens to be.
  • Security – with centralized data the risk of losing mission critical data is greatly reduced versus having several sets of remote data that are harder to protect and more at risk.

Availability

NVIDIA GRID vGPU on VMware Horizon 6 is available now through NVIDIA's Direct Access program. Participants that meet the qualifications for Direct Access also receive: invitations to exclusive community forums, exclusive bi-monthly webinars, the ability to collaborate with other program participants and share feedback via a private Direct Access community, and opportunities to evaluate new technologies while providing direct input to influence future virtualization products.
