OCZ Announces Z-Drive 4500 PCIe SSDs with Windows Accelerator Software

by Mark Kidd

OCZ Storage Solutions today announced the availability the new Z-Drive 4500 PCIe series, an update to the successful Z-Drive R4. The Z-Drive 4500 uses 19nm Toshiba MLC NAND flash and is available in 800GB, 1.6TB, and 3.2TB. The Z-Drive 4500 integrates with OCZ’s new Windows Accelerator (WXL) Software, a flash management and caching solution for Microsoft Windows Server applications that can make the drive available as a local flash volume, a flash cache for HDD volumes, or both.

Not long after Toshiba completed its acquisition of OCZ, the Z-Drive 4500 release reflects a continued commitment to established OCZ enterprise storage architectures, including the fruits of OCZ’s prior partnership with Toshiba’s NAND division, rather than products of the new relationship. The Z-Drive R4 provided best price-to-performance in its class upon the R4's debut 2011 and has been a valuable and flexible enterprise product line for OCZ.

The Z-Drive 4500 is driven by OCZ’s Virtualized Controller Architecture (VCA) and LSI SandForce SF-2582 processors. According to the company’s SNIA benchmarks, the 3.2TB Z-Drive 4500 reached random 4K block read throughput of up to 252,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) and random 4K block write throughput of 76,000 IOPS. Platform features include an internal storage controller to reduce host overhead, TRIM support, SMART monitoring, and the ability to serve as a bootable drive. The Z-Drive 4500 also features power loss data protection for in-flight write operations end-to-end data path protection for data integrity.

In addition to a new chassis with improved thermal properties over the Z-Drive R4 and a rebuilt driver stack for Windows and Linux, OCZ’s new Windows Accelerator (WXL) Software adds flash management and caching for Windows Server applications with ‘out-of-band’ analysis to cache frequently accessed data while avoiding latency from processing in the data path. In virtualized environments, OCZ’s VXL virtualization software can distribute cache resources to ensure that only virtual machines which require flash performance are utilizing the local cache.
