OCZ Introduces NVMe Z-Drive 6000 PCIe SSD Series

by Adam Armstrong

Today OCZ Storage Solutions introduced a new series of SSDs that combine NVMe technology and PCIe Gen 3 technology, the Z-Drive 6000 series. The new SSD series is all about performance and capacity. The Z-drive 6000 series is highly flexible as well, with multiple configurations supporting a variety of form factors, capacity points, and endurance ratings.

NVM Express is a scalable PCIe host controller interface designed to achieve high performance via a streamlined register interface and command set for both enterprise and client systems. NVMe is continuing to be adopted by several storage vendors and is expected to both offer faster, strong flash storage and improve PCIe SSD deployments over the next five years. The Z-drive 6000 portfolio utilizes NVMe to reduce latency to consistent and predictable levels, enable much higher throughput, and sustained high transfer speeds. This performance makes the new portfolio well suited for compute-intensive, analytical, online transactional and cloud-based enterprise applications.

The new portfolio comes in three types for three specific needs. The Z-Drive 6000 SFF Series for read-intensive applications. The Z-Drive 6300 SFF Series for mixed workload applications. The Z-Drive 6300 AIC Series for mixed workload applications. The 6300AIC Series supports Height/Half-Length add-in card form factors. The performance delivered by the portfolio fulfills the requirements for enterprise-class centralized storage systems, server caching applications, and virtualized applications.

OCZ also states that their new portfolio will support dual port capabilities in the future. With dual port capability two hosts to access to the same drive allowing redundancy inside the host. The Z-Drive 6000 series also supports hot-swapping, pre-set power thresholds, and temperature throttling.
