OWC has announced that they will be increasing the warranty on their SATA 6GB/s Mercury Extreme Pro 6G to five years. This applies retroactively to buyers who already purchased their 6G SSD. This warranty extension is only the second consumer SSD to get a full five years, with Intel offering it first on the SATA 3Gb/s Intel SSD 320.

For most buyers this warranty extension is about increasing confidence.  Knowing that OWC stands behind their drive, which uses 25nm flash, for the duration that most users expect to operate their SSD. The shift from 34nm to 25nm flash saw roughly a 40% decrease in write cycles, but most users still won’t see this impact over the life of their drive. The warranty upgrade also gives OWC a marketing edge in the competitive enthusiast SSD space.

This announcement also coincides with a decrease price for each capacity of the Mercury Pro 6G. The 120GB model has dropped from $319 to $297, the 240GB model went from $579 to $569, and the 480GB model decreased from $1799 to $1279.
