OWC expands Jellyfish lineup with scalable storage built for real-world media workflows.

Other World Computing (OWC) has announced the launch of two new shared storage systems — Jellyfish B24 and Jellyfish S24 — explicitly aimed at media professionals who need reliable, high-performance storage to handle modern workflows. These latest additions to the Jellyfish family are tailored to different ends of the video production spectrum: one offering vast capacity at an accessible price point, the other delivering high-speed SSD performance for demanding tasks like real-time editing.

Jellyfish B24: Built for Capacity, Backup, and Collaboration

The Jellyfish B24 is a scaled-down version of the Jellyfish R24. It is modified to be a more budget-friendly storage hub for smaller post-production teams or content creators working with large media libraries. It’s designed for teams that don’t need extreme speeds but need ample, dependable storage space and collaborative access.

Jellyfish B24

While not an SSD unit, the B24 is still performance-oriented in the way it scales. Its four SAS ports allow users to connect to four B24-E expansion chassis using the included mini-SAS cables. If the expansions use drives with the same capacity per disk as the main unit, the Jellyfish Manager software can merge them into a single, unified media pool. This boosts overall system performance and simplifies storage management.

With all four B24-E expansions attached, the B24 setup can achieve an impressive maximum capacity of 2.8 petabytes. It is a legitimate nearline backup server and a collaborative platform for storing footage and project files.

Jellyfish S24: SSD Performance for High-Speed Workflows

Conversely, the Jellyfish S24 targets users with more demanding needs, such as 4K or 8K video editors, VFX artists, or teams using bandwidth-heavy workflows. It has a complete SSD architecture and OWC’s Mercury Extreme Pro SSDs.These drives are known for their durability and consistent performance and give the S24 the edge for real-time editing or media ingest tasks that can’t afford to lag.

Jellyfish S24

The S24 supports expansion through the S24-E, an SSD-based chassis designed to scale capacity and performance. If the SSDs in the expansion match the size per drive of the head unit, users can combine the storage into a single media pool using Jellyfish Manager, just like the B24. Combined with expansions, the S24 can reach up to 736TB of fast, shared SSD storage—more than enough for large-scale production environments.

Software and Management

The B24 and S24 are managed using OWC Jellyfish Manager, the company’s proprietary tool for configuring and maintaining media pools, user permissions, and network settings. This centralized approach helps streamline setup and reduces the overhead often associated with managing shared storage.

With the addition of the B24 and S24, OWC expands its Jellyfish lineup to better accommodate a range of storage needs, from large-scale backups to high-speed production work. Both systems emphasize scalability and centralized management, offering teams flexibility as demands grow.
