Plextor M2 SSD Now Shipping

by Brian Beeler

Plextor announced their second generation series of SSDs at CES last month, and now they’ve sent word that the drives are shipping. The Plextor M2 SSDs use a SATA 6Gb/s interface and deliver top line read speeds of 480Mb/s and writes of 330MB/s, which incidentally is faster than the 400MB/s and 300MB/s quoted in the initial product announcement.

The 2.5 inch SSD uses a Marvel 88SS9174 controller and features a 128MB DDR3 cache, TRIM support and bundled Acronis True Image software for easy drive cloning and migration. Plextor also includes Instant Restore technology and Dynamic Wear Leveling to increase the lifespan on the drive.

Other highlights include power consumption of .75W active and .25W idle, three year warranty, 1.5 million hour MTBF.

Plextor and Corsair both announced SSDs at CES based on the Marvell 9164 controller; being first to market gives Plextor a solid head start in the enthusiast SSD market. Our review unit is due in next week, we’ll report performance benchmarks soon to see how the M2 stacks up.

Pricing and Availability

The Plextor M2 Series SSD is available now in 64GB ($179.99), 128GB ($329.99) and 256GB ($699.99) capacities.
