Key Updates in Proxmox Backup Server 3.3

The update introduces several notable features and improvements:

  • Push-Based Sync for Offsite Backups:
Users now have the option to “push” backup data from an onsite Proxmox Backup Server to an offsite server, a change from the previous “pull-only” method. This improvement ensures that backups can be sent even when the offsite server cannot initiate a network connection, adding more flexibility for disaster recovery setups.
  • Support for Removable Datastores:
The software now supports creating datastores on removable storage media, enabling backups to be easily shared or transferred between servers. Administrators can unmount and remount these datastores on the same or another Proxmox Backup Server instance, providing greater portability and flexibility. Both the command line and the web interface support these operations.
  • Webhook Integration for Notifications:
Enhancing its notification system, Proxmox Backup Server 3.3 introduces a webhook target that allows administrators to configure HTTP requests triggered by specific events, such as sync jobs or backup verifications. With customizable headers and payloads, this feature makes integrating with other systems and services that support webhooks easier.
  • Accelerated Backups for Hosts and Containers:
File-based backups for hosts and containers can now identify unchanged files from the last snapshot, reducing processing time and enabling faster job completion. This improvement is particularly beneficial for environments with frequent backup schedules.

Proxmox Backup Server 3.3 Integration, Installation and Licensing

Proxmox Backup Server 3.3 runs on Debian 12.8 “Bookworm” and includes the Linux kernel 6.8.12-4 by default, with an optional upgrade to kernel 6.11. It also comes bundled with ZFS 2.2.6, featuring compatibility updates for newer kernels. The platform integrates seamlessly with the Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE), allowing users to add backup server datastores directly to the virtual environment for simplified management.

The software is free under the GNU AGPLv3 license and can be downloaded as an ISO image for bare-metal installations using its wizard-based installer. Users can install it on top of Debian or upgrade from previous versions through APT.

Proxmox Backup Server 3.3 Enterprise Support Options

While the software is free, enterprise users can subscribe to Proxmox’s support model. This subscription provides access to the Enterprise Repository for thoroughly tested updates and technical support. Pricing begins at €520 (roughly $550) per server, which includes unlimited backup storage and client support.
