In a tiny 1U, 12-inch deep format, it’s ideal for A/V racks or network racks, where a traditional 29-inch depth server simply wouldn’t fit. You could also conceive of a scenario where it can be used in a small portable rack for field use.
Today, QNAP announced a new short-depth 4-bay NAS for home and small office use, the QNAP TS-451DeU. In a tiny 1U, 12-inch deep format, it’s ideal for A/V racks or network racks, where a traditional 29-inch depth server simply wouldn’t fit. You could also conceive of a scenario where it can be used in a small portable rack for field use.
This small NAS has space for four hot-swappable 3.5” hard drives, has dual 2.5GbE ports, and two M.2 2280 SATA 6 Gb/s SSD slots. It comes equipped with an embedded Intel Celeron J4025 dual-core 2.0GHz processor, which turbo up to 2.9GHz, and 2GB DDR4 memory, expandable up to 8GB via the dual SODIMM slots. It’s unfortunate there is no support for NVMe drives, but given this device’s primary purpose as a cost-effective, entry level NAS, that’s okay. It is a welcome sight to see dual 2.5Gbe LAN ports, 5Gbps when bonded, allowing for high speed network storage on just Cat5e cabling.
The TS-451DeU has QNAP’s App Center to facilitate easy expansion of functionality. Some QNAP’s options include “hosting multiple virtual machines and containers, deploying a cloud storage gateway, using a Plex media server, creating a multi-zone multimedia hub, implementing a professional video surveillance system, and more.” Given its short-depth, this would do well as a video surveillance machine, especially if loaded with high capacity surveillance drives.
