QNAP Systems has announced the availability of the TS-hx86, the company’s first desktop QuTS hero NAS series. Designed as a comprehensive but affordable NAS solution, the QNAP TS-hx86 series is ideal for high-end businesses and are available in 6-bay (TS-h686) and 8-bay (TS-h886) models. It is highlighted by Intel Xeon D-1600 series processors, 2.5GbE connectivity, M.2 NVMe Gen 3 x4 SSD slots, PCIe expandability, and up to 128 GB server-grade DDR4 ECC memory. In addition, the new QNAP TS-hx86 series runs the ZFS-based QuTS hero operating system, which offers business-critical features such as data integrity, inline data deduplication and compression, snapshots, and real-time SnapSync.
The TS-hx86 is equipped with both two 2.5-inch SSD trays and two M.2 NVMe Gen 3 x4 SSD slots. This allows users to create SSD caching configurations for improved performance and reduced latency. The NAS is also outfitted with four 2.5GbE RJ45 ports that support Port Trunking and failover. These support QNAP’s managed and unmanaged 10GbE/2.5GbE switches, which helps businesses to implement affordable high-speed, secure and scalable network environments.
The Dual PCIe slots add a range of flexibility to the TS-hx86. With it, QNAP indicates users can add:
- 5GbE/10GbE/25GbE/40GbE network cards
- QM2 cards for extra M.2 SSDs or 10GbE (10GBASE-T) connectivity
- QXP expansion cards to connect QNAP’s multi-SATA 6 Gb/s expansion enclosures
- entry-level graphics cards to add HDMI output, increase video transcoding/streaming performance, and provide GPU pass-through to virtual machines
QNAP stresses that the new TS-hx86 series provides data integrity, self-healing, and supports multiple RAID configurations with Triple Parity and Triple Mirror to enhance data protection. With QuTS hero, the TS-hx86 series also provides “near-unlimited” snapshots and versioning, which helps to further protect user data. Moreover, its advanced block-based real-time SnapSync ensures that both the primary and secondary NAS maintain identical data.
