QNAP TVS-x73e SMB NAS Series Now Available

by Lyle Smith

QNAP Systems released their high-performance SMB NAS TVS-x73e series today, which is comprised of the TVS-873e (8-bay), QNAP TVS-673e (6-bay) and QNAP TVS-473e (4-bay) models. These new NAS devices are highlighted by an AMD RX-421BD quad-core APU, up to 64GB DDR4 RAM, two M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSD slots (for SSD cache acceleration with Qtier auto-tiering), a QuickAccess port, dual 4K HDMI output, and hardware-assisted 4K video transcoding acceleration.  The TVS-x73e series is both secure and scalable, and is equipped with two PCIe slots that support 10GbE NICs, QM2 cards or USB 3.1 10Gbps cards. This allows small and medium businesses to build a private cloud for applications such as high-speed data transfer rates, backup/recovery, virtualization, media playback, and graphics display.

This allows small and medium businesses to build a private cloud for applications such as high-speed data transfer rates, backup/recovery, virtualization, media playback, and graphics display.

When outfitted with a 10GbE NIC, QNAP quotes the new NAS line to boast upwards of 1,139MB/s in throughput and up to 1,091MB/s with AES-NI hardware-accelerated encryption engine. Moreover, SSD caching and two built-in M.2 SSD slots allow the TVS-x73e to benefit from Qtier technology. This helps optimize storage efficiency across M.2 SSDs, 2.5-inch SSDs and high-capacity HDDs, creating a balance between cost, performance, and capacity. Users can also add up to two M.2 SSDs to either configure SSD caching, or create a RAID5 tiered storage.

Its AMD 3rd Gen GCN architecture boasts impressive GPU performance, allowing the TVS-x73e series to support 4K video decoding and 4K UHD displays, while the dual HDMI output can be controlled with the bundled remote control. In addition, this iSCSI-SAN unified storage solution supports all the business-ready features an SMB would need, including VMware, Citrix, Microsoft Hyper-V and Windows Server 2012 R2 environments, as well as support to natively host multiple virtual machines (with Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Android) and containers (LXC and Docker).

Users also have the option to expand the storage capacity of the TVS-x73e series by connecting QNAP expansion enclosures (UX-800P, UX-500P or REXP-1000 Pro) to the NAS.
