Today at Riverbed Disrupt in New York City, Riverbed Technology announced that its software-defined edge solution, SteelFusion, will now be offered in more deployment options, both cloud and virtual, giving customers even more choice and flexibility. Riverbed is working with IBM and Avnet to deploy SteelFusion on IBM SoftLayer and Virtual SteelFusion Edge on Avnet through a fully integrated system.
As we’ve stated in the past, Riverbed’s main focus is remote and branch offices (ROBO). Back in June, Riverbed released the results of a new survey centered around ROBO and the importance and concerns of ROBO for larger enterprises. SteelFusion is built specifically to address the concern of ROBO IT management. SteelFusion is the first hyperconverged infrastructure built for the purpose of efficient management of ROBO IT. ROBO can present difficulties such as those listed above but SteelFusion aims to tackle these difficulties by extending the power, security, and efficiency of the data center to the branch office.
Benefits of SteelFusion include:
- Consolidates server, storage, backup infrastructure into a single appliance and removes data from edge locations without any compromise to application performance
- Consolidates and accelerates time-consuming edge IT operations, such as backup and data protection, provisioning of new services and sites, and fast recovery to central data centers in a single solution
- Extends enterprise-class security, services, and resiliency of the data center and the cloud out to all edge locations, regardless of distance, and without compromising performance
Building off of March’s announcement with the support for AWS and Azure, Riverbed is adding even more cloud integrations with its support for the enterprise cloud platform, IBM SoftLayer. Along with deployment on SoftLayer, SteelFusion supports IBM’s SDS solution, Spectrum Accelerate. These cloud integrations give Riverbed customers more choice for centralizing their edge IT.
Working with Avnet, Riverbed will help deliver complete software-defined edge capabilities in a virtual form factor with Virtual SteelFusion Edge. This version is capable of running on any hardware that meets requirements, potentially helping to cut down on costs and add greater flexibility.
Availability
SteelFusion can be deployed on IBM SoftLayer today. Virtual SteelFusion Edge is expected to be available through Avnet later this year.
