Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of the 840 EVO mSATA SSD line-up, including the industry’s first 1TB mSATA SSD. The new SSD features the compact mSATA form factor, which is roughly a quarter size of a 2.5-inch SSD, while offering the same level of high density and high performance.
The 840 EVO mSATA SSD takes full advantage of Samsung’s advanced 128Gb NAND flash memory based on 10 nanometer class process technology. In order to form a 1TB version SSD, a total of four flash memory packages are used, with each package having 16 layers of 128Gb chips. The 1TB mSATA SSD is based on the advanced memory technology, with a thickness of 3.85 millimeters and a weight of 8.5 grams. These figures are approximately 40 percent smaller and 12 times lighter compared to a typical HDD.
The 840 EVO mSATA SSD line-up is available in 120GB, 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities and uses Samsung’s proprietary controller and TurboWrite technology. The 1TB model boasts 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS, in addition to sequential read and write speed of 540MB/s and 520MB/s respectively. This allows for complex multi-tasking for advanced users.
Samsung’s new 840 EVO can also be used alongside other data storage devices embedded on a notebook, either HDD or SSD, so long as the notebook is equipped with a mSATA socket. Additionally, the new mSATA line-up ships with Samsung Magician 4.3. This software solution allows a maximum of over 1,000MB/s sequential read speed on RAPID, which is roughly twice the performance level of a typical SATA SSD and ten times compared to an average HDD.
The Samsung SSD uses 256-bit AES keys, which allows for strong data security, and is also compliant with TCG Opal and IEEE 1667 standards. In addition, users can easily transfer their data to the new SSD using Samsung Data Migration and Samsung Magician 4.3, both of which are compatible with Windows 8 and support 10 different languages.
Availability
The 840 EVO mSATA SSD line will be globally available sometime this month; launch dates may vary depending on the region.
