Once considered a necessity, the internal optical disk drive is becoming a thing of the past as manufacturers jettison the component to make notebook computers thinner, lighter and less power-hungry. Samsung has joined this trend with its latest notebooks, but today announced a thin external DVD Writer for those who find themselves needing to burn DVDs or CDs. The drive is thin and takes its styling cues from the Series 9 notebooks, but it should look fine sitting next to a Macbook Air or even a netbook.

The Samsung SE-208AB is USB-powered to eliminate the need for an external power supply. It reads and writes the standard DVD and CD formats one would expect. One nice feature is the drive’s ability to be recognized as a media device by televisions equipped for media playback via USB. This feature isn’t new with this model, but Samsung has increased the number of readable media files to 3000 as well as recognizing files in directories nested five levels deep.
