SanDisk has announced an agreement to purchase enterprise SSD developer Pliant Technology for approximately $327 million in cash. The deal is expected to close by the end of SanDisk’s second fiscal quarter, the first part of July.

Pliant currently sells the Lightning EFD family of enterprise SAS SSDs and is expected to debut a PCIe-based solution as well. The Lighning SSDs are available with both SLC and MLC NAND. Clearly SanDisk sees value in leveraging Pliant’s enterprise SSD experience with their large-scale NAND production capabilities.

Driving this move is big growth potential in the enterprise SSD space due in large part to the acceptance of MLC-based SSDs. Joseph Unsworth, research director at Gartner expects enterprise SSD revenue to reach $4.2 billion in 2015, up from $994 million in 2010.
