As we’ve said many times, data is growing at a massive rate. A recent study by IDC and Seagate found that data creation will swell to a total of 163 zettabytes (ZB) by 2025, 10x more than today. While much of this growing data is an issue to be addressed by larger enterprises, the medium to smaller guys are also feeling the pinch. Seagate states that the drives announced this morning are designed for today’s media storage needs – including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 4K resolution and 360-degree videos – and offer scalability for the future with increased space and speed.
On the desktop side of things, the 12TB BarraCuda Pro offers the highest capacity of any desktop HDD (twice that of its closest competitor). The BarraCuda Pro is ideal for demanding data management needs from creative editing workflows to gaming to desktop computing. Creative professionals that need lots of capacity along with good performance will find the BarraCuda Pro right up their alley. It is also good for users that do not wish to off load large or old files to a cloud service.
On The NAS side of things, both the IronWolf and IronWolf Pro 12TB HDDs also offer the highest capacity currently available in the NAS market. These drives are great for NAS users that are looking to keep their same device and yet increase their overall capacity. Along with more capacity in the same space, the drives also support Seagate’s IronWolf Health Management (IHM) software. Designed to operate on enabled Synology DiskStation NAS, Asustor NAS, and QNAP NAS, populated with Seagate IronWolf or IronWolf Pro drives, IHM is said to improve the overall system reliability by displaying actionable prevention, intervention or recovery options for the user.
Availability and Pricing
The Seagate IronWolf, IronWolf Pro, and BarraCuda Pro are available now for $469, $539, and $529 respectively. IHM is expected to be available in the next quarter.
