Today at the 2017 Flash Memory Summit (FMS), Seagate Technology announced two updates to its Nytro SSD line, the Nytro 5000 M.2 NVMe SSD and the Nytro 3000 SAS SSD. Each of these new drives had been designed to address specific needs of different market segments of cloud and data center. To address the explosion of data and the constant need for more performance, Seagate will be demonstrating the world’s highest capacity and faster performing NVMe drive, a 64TB NVMe AIC that can read at 13GB/s.

To address the explosion of data and the constant need for more performance, Seagate will be demonstrating the world’s highest capacity and faster performing NVMe drive, a 64TB NVMe AIC that can read at 13GB/s.
The Nytro 5000 M.2 NVMe SSD is the next-generation version of the Nytro XM1440 M.2 NVMe SSD. The Nytro 5000 offers up to 2TB and low power usage in a small form factor. From a performance perspective, the drive is quoted at providing up to 67K IOPS random write, twice that of the XM1440. The drive has configurable overprovisioning allowing users to adjust the drive to the specific endurance or capacity needs of their organizations. The ideal uses cases for the Nytro 5000 are data mining, weather modeling, and online transaction processing.
The Nytro 3000 SAS SSD is the next-generation version of the 1200.2. The Nytro 3000 offer much more capacity, up to 15TB, and better performance (up to 2,200 MB/s in sequential read performance) than the 1200.2. The drive features a dual-port SAS interface to maintain data integrity in the event of an unexpected communication channel loss. Ideal use cases include content streaming services and software defined storage (SDS) configurations. The drive will be offered in several configurations, endurances, and security options to best fit the needs of various organizations.
Data is exploding and it all has the potential to benefit companies so it must be stored so insight can be gained. Last year, Seagate announced a 60TB SAS SSD (though it doesn’t appear to be shipping in any volume of note). This year the company is demonstrating a 64TB NVMe SSD. The drive will be a FHHL AIC that has quoted speeds of 13GB/s. Using the M.2 form factor, Seagate was able to combine eight SSD controllers onto a single PCIe board. These eight controllers manage the flash capacity through a single PCIe slot.
Availability
Both the Nytro 5000 NVMe M.2 SSD and Nytro 3000 SAS SSD are expected to be available later this year. Customer samples of the 64TB NVMe drive are expected next year.
