In September Seagate Technology announced that they had developed the world’s density mobile hard drive (HDD) with up to 2TB in a 7mm form factor. Last month Seagate also announced what they referred to as the world’s thinnest 2TB portable hard drive. Today Seagate is announcing that they have begun shipping their new ultra thin Seagate Mobile HDD to OEMs. Seagate claims that not only is this the thinnest and lightest HDD but they say it is the fastest as well.

As far as mobile devices go, thin is in and it just keeps getting thinner. From MacBook Airs to the new HP Envy 13 laptops are getting thinner and thinner but the demand for capacity grows as files and programs grow more complex. Seagate was able to boost areal density to 1TB per platter in a 2.5-inch form factor, and like the portable drive they use 1TB per disk. The Mobile HDD weighs only 3.17 oz., 25% lighter the previous generation of mobile drives.
Seagate’s new Mobile HDD uses a SATA 6Gb/s interface so it will work with most mobile computers on the market. The 2TB of capacity will give users the ability to store over 200,000 photos, 250,000 songs or 124 hours of high definition video. The drive is available in both 1TB and 2TB capacities.
