Seagate has unveiled the Seagate Kinetic HDD, the company’s new object-based storage drive that uses the Kinetic Open Storage platform. Seagate’s HDD is designed to dramatically reduce total cost of ownership by combining an open source object storage protocol with Ethernet connectivity to eliminate multiple layers of legacy software and hardware infrastructure, which in turn lowers equipment costs and dramatically simplifies cloud storage architectures.

The Kinetic Open Storage platform simplifies large-scale storage architectures by eliminating the overhead of an entire storage server tier. These fewer number of storage servers reduces power consumption and headcount expenses associated with managing storage, resulting in lower operating costs.

The Kinetic Open Storage platform also improves drive and rack level performance by removing the need for legacy file systems and moving HDD storage media space management to the drive itself. Ultimately this offers a streamlined architecture, allowing storage applications to communicate directly with the Kinetic object storage HDDs. As a result, performance is enhanced by eliminating storage server bottlenecks due to direct IP addressing each drive, which improves system level throughput.

With the platform, servers and storage can be scaled independently and developed more quickly. Cloud data centers can add servers and storage at entirely different rates, catering to individual use cases. Additionally, Seagate indicates that HDD innovation can progress more rapidly as servers and operating systems are protected from device changes through the Kinetic open source API.
