Seagate Now Shipping New Flagship Enterprise Turbo SSHD

by Mark Kidd

Seagate is now shipping its new Enterprise Turbo Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD), first in its class and billed at up to three times the random performance of current 15K RPM enterprise hard drives. Available in capacities up to 600GB, the Enterprise Turbo marks a new balance between capacity and performance that promises SSD-like speeds for "hot" data without the compromises in cost and maximum capacity that come with solid state drives.

Last month, Seagate and IBM began building interest in this new hybrid enterprise drive platform with a 10K RPM version of the drive that is available for IBM System x servers. Preliminary Storage Performance Council benchmarks of the 10K edition indicated more than double the IOPS of comparable 10K RPM hard drives.

Enterprise Turbo SSHD Specs

  • Capacity: 600GB, 450GB, 300GB
  • Cache: 32GB eMLC
  • Buffer: 128MB DRAM
  • RPM: 10K
  • IOPS: Up to 900
  • MTBF/AFR: 2 million, .44%
  • RV tolerance (to 1800 Hz): 28 rad/sec2
  • Warranty: 5 years

The Enterprise Turbo SSHD's selling point is that it offers caching at the I/O level, accelerating hard drive storage without requiring a hybrid array of HDDs and SSDs. Seagate intends for the Enterprise Turbo SSHD to take on traditional hard drives in applications such as big data analytics, virtual desktop infrastructure, and database and transaction processing, and says it will price the new drives competitively to enter into those markets. It also features a self-encrypting drive option.

Availability

Seagate has not announced details about pricing and availability, but has indicted that the Enterprise Turbo SSHD will be shipping immediately.
