Today at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, Seagate Technology announces several mobile storage products for consumers and creative professionals on the go. These products run the gamut from a mobile drone backup, a external storage plus charger solution, a USB-C ultra-fast flash drive, to yet another rugged external drive. These products hit just about all markets in the mobile storage field.

These products run the gamut from a mobile drone backup, a external storage plus charger solution, a USB-C ultra-fast flash drive, to yet another rugged external drive. These products hit just about all markets in the mobile storage field.
Drones have gone from a hobbyist oddity to a mainstream way of taking videos used by several professionals. Seagate and DJI released a portable storage device last year for drone users to quickly offload their SD cards so they wouldn’t need as many. This is one way to go but professionals need to see the “dailies” of their work; they don’t want to miss a shot because they had to go home to edit the footage. This year, the companies are releasing the LaCie DJI Copilot. This 2TB device allows users to transfer SD cards to the storage device where they can be viewed on a mobile device through an app. No dragging laptops into the field and no missing shots waiting to check the footage later. The Copilot BOSS (Back-up On Set Solution) app allows users to playback their footage in full resolution as well as allowing them to manage their content. Users can back up devices, recharge batteries, and have the capacity for 4K 30fps video footage and 20K+ RAW photos with the LaCie DJI Copilot.
Battery life is something everyone with a mobile phone tends to struggle with, especially if it is used for both personal and professional life. The largest concentration of smartphones is in China and Indonesia, and these users are always on their devices in a way that dwarfs the western world’s usage. That being the case, they suffer from batteries running down frequently. Seagate is helping to address this issue its new Joy Drive and acts as both a backup and a charger. The Joy Drive extends both the battery life and the storage capacity of Android users and through a partnership with JingDong, one of China’s largest online retailers, Seagate will bring this device to the Chinese market in March. The Joy Drive comes in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB and is backed by a 2-year warranty.
Seagate is getting in on the portable SSD game with the announcement of the Seagate Fast SSD. The new portable SSD has quoted performance of up to 540MB/s and comes with a USB-C connection. The SSD will be available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB capacities.
It seems that once a month there is a new data security breach and another reason to be concerned about data on mobile devices. Seagate is helping to assuage these growing concerns with the latest release of its LaCie Rugged device, the LaCie Rugged Secure. Built with the usual toughness found in the Rugged line, the new device also comes with hardware encryption using Seagate Secure technology. This 2TB devices is automatically secure and password protected when disconnected from a computer using Seagate’s Toolkit Software.
As most of the devices are aimed at creative professionals or prosumers, Seagate is announcing that it is furthering its partnership with Adobe allowing Adobe applications to be bundled with Seagate and LaCie drives. This includes two free months of the “Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan” (worth $19.98) – which features the new cloud-based photo service, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC – across the full range of Seagate Backup Plus and LaCie Porsche Design devices, as well as packaging one free month of the “Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan” (worth $74.99) – which features Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC and much more – with all LaCie Rugged, LaCie d2 and LaCie big devices.
During CES 2018, Seagate will be in the Seagate Experience Zone at The Venetian with their partners Adobe, Blackmagic, CyArk, DJI, Grab Games, ioSafe and Synology.
Availability and Pricing
The LaCie DJI Copilot is expected to be available in the spring for roughly $349. The Seagate Joy Drive is expected to be available in March for 660 CNY or $99 USD. The Seagate Fast SSD is expected to be available in the spring starting at $99. The LaCie Rugged Secure is also expected to ship in the spring for $139.
