Seagate is announcing its Terascale HDD and Enterprise Performance 10K HDD v7 enterprise-class drives that have been optimized for both cloud infrastructures and data centers. The drives deliver high-end capacities at 4TB for the Terascale and 1.2TB for the Enterprise Performance 10K HDD v7, while still delivering low power consumption figures to drive a lower TCO than competing drives. This match is designed to meet the scale of data growth observed in cloud and data center applications. In fact, Seagate quotes that capacity shipped to enterprise clouds will double and compose 60% of the total storage capacity shipped by 2020.

Seagate Terascale HDD
The Terascale HDD is offered with up to 4TB of capacity and is Seagate’s lowest $/GB enterprise HDD for use in scalable multi-drive systems. Furthermore, the drive delivers one of the lowest power consumption rates for an enterprise HDD, starting at just 4.8W. This reduces energy and cooling costs that are significant in cloud and data centers environments for organizations. As such, the Terascale is designed to be implemented in low workload, 24×7 replicated environments.
The Terascale also features Seagate’s Instant Secure Erase (ISE) technology which minimizes drive erasure times. Instead of spending a long time erasing a drive, organizations can utilize the ISE technology which performs the same task in milliseconds. The time saved is substantial when getting rid of or repurposing even a single drive, let alone a whole batch of them.
Seagate Enterprise Performance 10K HDD v7
The Seagate Enterprise Performance 10K HDD v7 is 2.5" model is a 1.2TB drive that interfaces over 6Gb/s SAS, spins at 10K RPM and delivers performance coupled with low power consumption. The drive replaces the Enterprise Performance 10K HDD v6, which was formerly known as the Savvio 10K.6 that we recently reviewed, and it provides data centers with plenty of performance, even for write-intensive applications. Seagate quotes the sequential data rate at 204MB/s, which they say is aimed at competing 15K legacy drives. Designed for server and storage solutions, the drive features strong performance for high random and sequential workloads including database transaction processing and high workload servers that process high-priority data in power/space-constrained data centers. The drive also features ISE technology like the Terascale, and Seagate has implemented its RAID Rebuild technology to drive faster and safer recovery.
