SilverStone today announced HDDBoost, a device that pairs a hard drive and a Solid State Disk (SSD) to provide users the best of both worlds.
HDDBoost is a single module that connects both an SSD and a hard drive. To set up HDDBoost, users can take an existing hard drive, insert it into the module with nearly any 2.5" SSD, plug in the SATA port and power connectors and go.
When HDDBoost is installed:
"HDDBOOST will carry out the action of mirror backup right after the initial installation. This action will copy the front-end data of the original system hard drive to the SSD sequentially."
Following:
"After the initial mirroring of data is completed, SSD and HDD will have the same front -end data. HDDBOOST’s controller chip will then set data read priority to SSD to take advantage of SSD’s much faster read speed."
Essentially, the controller will tell Windows it should use the SSD when possible to maximize performance. It is important to note that all data is written to the hard drive; the SSD simply mirrors the front-end data (such as the operating system). According to SilverStone, no software or drivers are needed to use HDDBoost.
Pricing and availability is not listed on SilverStone’s site, however Bit-tech.net says it will be released on 19 Feb for 33 Euros (about US$46).
