The Gen5 drive uses 176-layer 4D NAND memory, an in-house controller and more or less doubles the performance available from Gen4 SSDs. There’s also a big uptick in efficiency as a result, with a performance-per-watt improvement of over 75%.
SK hynix has shown the PS1010 before, demonstrating the 7.68TB E3.S drive topping 3.1 million IOPS in a demo at OCP 2022. While the full spec sheet isn’t public yet, SK hynix indicates the PS1010 sees a 130% increase in read speed and a 49% increase in write speed compared to the previous generation. We’ve looked at their prior E1.s and E1.L SSDs here.

More Performance and Efficiency
SK hynix is also showcasing its HBM3 memory product, which is designed for high-performance computing, as well as its GDDR6-AiM memory that uses PIM (Processing In Memory) technology and its CXL (Compute Express Link) memory, which allows for flexible expansion of memory capacity and performance.
Market Impact
When it comes to enterprise storage, the future is very clearly EDSFF. The current clubhouse leader is E3.S, that’s where virtually all of the server vendors have decided to go for the eventual U.2 replacement. While U.2 will ship a lot of units for the next year or two, PCIe Gen6 will move exclusively to EDSFF, effectively ending investment for new U.2 and U.3 SSDs. E1.S and E1.L will continue to have their spots, the latter especially when density is of utmost importance, but they’re largely hyperscaler form factors. E3.S will start seeing serious slot availability starting probably in Q2 of this year, with increasing momentum from there.
For SK hynix and the other SSD vendors then, the race is on to have drives that are qualified by each server vendor, and to some extent storage array vendors as well. The products being showcased by SK hynix at CES 2023 demonstrate the company’s commitment to developing innovative, energy-efficient memory solutions that meet the increasing demand for high-performance workloads. We’re excited to see these Gen5 SSDs get closer to full production and GA.
