Solidigm Launches the World’s Highest Capacity PCIe SSD: The 122TB D5-P5336

by Harold Fritts

Solidigm pushes the capacity limit with the introduction of the new D5-P5336 122TB SSD.

Solidigm has introduced the industry’s highest-capacity PCIe SSD, the 122TB D5-P5336. This SSD doubles the storage capacity of Solidigm’s previous 61.44TB model and stands out as the world’s first SSD offering unlimited random Write endurance for a full five years. This new capacity benchmark presents an ideal solution for AI and other data-intensive workloads, delivering expansive storage capabilities within a compact and efficient footprint. To put it in perspective, 122.88TB is approximately enough storage to house 4K-quality copies of every theatrically released movie from the 1990s, multiplied 2.6 times over.

With the world racing to implement AI, data storage demands and data centers’ power, thermal, and space constraints continue to grow. Solidigm’s new 122TB D5-P5336 is designed for power and space efficiency, delivering unprecedented storage density and operational efficiency from core data centers to edge environments. Data center operators can deploy the 122TB D5-P5336 with confidence, relying on Solidigm’s proven leadership in QLC technology, which has resulted in the shipment of over 100 exabytes (EB) of QLC-based products since 2018.

Greg Matson, Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Marketing at Solidigm, highlighted the impact of this innovation, stating that data center architects are increasingly challenged to address power and space efficiency issues. He emphasized that the 122TB D5-P5336 is precisely engineered to optimize every watt and square inch, making it a significant advancement in SSD technology. Matson noted that this high-capacity SSD uses significantly less power per terabyte, enabling data centers to allocate valuable energy resources to other priorities.

Maximizing Space and Power in Data Centers with Ultra-High Density SSDs

The 122TB D5-P5336 offers substantial improvements in power and space efficiency:

  • The drive consumes up to 84% less storage power in network-attached storage (NAS) environments compared to traditional hybrid configurations using hard disk drives (HDDs) and triple-level cell (TLC) SSDs.
  • At edge installations, it delivers 3.4 times more terabytes per watt versus standard 30TB TLC SSDs, enhancing power density in space-constrained locations.
  • The D5-P5336, developed by the original pioneers of QLC technology, provides reliable, high-density storage solutions that data centers can deploy confidently.

In addition to reducing power consumption, the new Solidigm SSDs optimize physical space utilization. The 122TB drive allows data centers to scale more efficiently. It reduces NAS footprints by up to a 4:1 ratio compared to traditional HDD and TLC solutions. The D5-P5336 122TB drive stores four times more data in edge installations than 30TB TLC drives, making it ideal for locations with limited physical space.

These advancements ensure that the high-density QLC drives outperform competing TLC-based solutions in data-intensive tasks. Specifically, the D5-P5336 has demonstrated up to 15% better performance in workloads such as content delivery networks, general-purpose storage applications, and object storage than entry-level high-density data center TLC drives.

Additionally, under sustained write workloads, the D5-P5336 delivers up to a 40% improvement in read response time, increasing overall performance and reliability in demanding environments.

With the 122TB D5-P5336, Solidigm is setting a new high bar when it comes to endurance. The 122TB SSD can support 5 years with a 100% duty cycle 24/7 with either 32KB random writes, or 4K random writes. With the 32KB workload, after 5 years the drive will have 5% of its endurance remaining, while with 4K random write workload, 12% will remain. While the 0.60 DWPD stays in-line with the previous 61.44TB D5-P5336, the additional NAND gives the 122TB model the needed headroom to support continuous workloads.

Travis Vigil, Senior Vice President of ISG Product Management at Dell Technologies, noted the importance of high-density solutions like the 122TB D5-P5336. He emphasized that the growing demand for AI solutions requires infrastructure that maximizes storage energy efficiency while minimizing physical footprint. Dell Technologies views high-density storage as key to meeting these objectives and supports innovations such as Solidigm’s new 122TB SSD as it strives toward increased density in its solutions.

Availability

Solidigm’s 122TB D5-P5336 provides enterprises and data centers with an advanced solution to efficiently tackle modern data storage challenges with impressive capacity and reliability. The new 122TB D5-P5336 is now available for customer sampling and adds to Solidigm’s high-capacity SSD lineup designed for AI and other data-intensive applications. This drive further establishes Solidigm’s leadership in high-capacity QLC SSD technology, which ranges from 15TB to 122TB. Importantly, all models in this lineup use the same controller, simplifying customer qualification processes and ensuring compatibility across various deployment scenarios.
