A study conducted by Ponemon Institute has found that USB flash drives are an underestimated security risk in large organizations including government and enterprise. Over half the responding organizations reported losing flash drives containing sensitive information.
Surprisingly, well over a majority of the respondents did not place a high priority on protecting USB flash drives even though the same respondents knew data breaches were caused by them. The report found that even in businesses that use secured flash drives, the use of unsecured flash drives was still high (over 50 percent). Additionally, less than a third of organizations in the study had policies to prevent USB misuse.
