Today, Super Micro Computer, Inc. introduced new Supermicro 2U Ultra SuperServer For 5G and telecommunication environments. The new compact 2U systems are optimized for edge micro data centers where the bulk of the 5G action seems to be happening. The new SuperServer supports second generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 205W TDP, and up to eight add-on cards.

5G is the latest buzz in telco industries as well as several IoT makers and users (not to mention fueling bizarre conspiracy theories). As telco environments begin to adapt/switch to 5G they will have to adopt new standards and new infrastructure. Part of the new infrastructure is changing at edge locations where network congestion is causing issues. As they always tend to do, Supermicro saw a need and swooped in to fill it, by delivering industry-standard servers optimized for 5G applications.
According to the company, its new short-depth 2U rackmount form factor, Ultra SuperServer comes with high reliability, availability and serviceability features. Edge micro data centers need high-performance compute, storage, and networking and to this end, the new servers support two New 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 205-watt TDP each. To top of high-performance support, the new servers can also support up to 6TB of DRAM and they have eight PCIe 3.0 slots for more networking options, including the Intel FPGA Programmable Acceleration Card N3000 (Intel FPGA PAC N3000), a highly customizable platform which enables high-throughput, lower latency, and high-bandwidth applications. The systems have hot-swap drives and fans to make them a bit more serviceable at the edge.
