Today, Supermicro announced a pole-mounted server. The new IP65 enclosure-based servers are targeting the 5G and other edge-focused markets. Regular readers are probably already familiar with the company from our articles like our recent review of Supermicro’s 6019P server, but I’m still going to provide a little background information on them for new readers. The company (Super Micro Computer Incorporated, SMCI) was founded in 1993 and is one of the fastest-growing IT companies in the world. Supermicro provides a wide range of products and servers, most focused around cloud software and hardware.

The new IP65 enclosure-based servers run on Intel Xeon D and 2nd Gen Intel Xeon processors. Expansion capability takes the form of three PCI-E slots and support for a range of storage formats and form factors, including SSD, M.2, and EDSFF drives.

While Supermicro is hoping customers will find their new server useful for AI inferencing, and other edge-focused applications, most of their focus for these appliances seem to be on the 5G RAN markets. Supermicro is a contributing member of the O-RAN (open radio access network) alliance. As such, they’re attempting to position their new appliance as the go-to choice for 5G RAN edge servers.
