The new SuperEdge is powered by 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, allowing it to produce data center processing power at the edge while accelerating analysis and real-time application functionality. Node density has also increased by 50% compared to previous application-optimized servers for 5G, IoT, and Edge workloads, says Supermicro. In addition, each node can accommodate up to 2TB of DDR4 DRAM, meaning it has the capability to support more extensive and complex applications than previously available.
As you can see below with the top panel removed, the 8 DIMMS surround the CPU slot with four system fans just above it. The Supermicro SuperEdge’s X12SPED-F server board is also intelligently laid out and optimized for airflow to keep the motherboard components and server nodes running 24/7.
Scalability and physical footprint are also a concern for Supermicro. Customers can easily add additional SuperEdge nodes as their businesses (and customer demands) grow and, with a depth of only 430 mm, it is small enough to fit in compact data centers and other areas where space might be an issue. Users can also install GPUs on the SuperEdge, allowing it to perform AI calculations at the edge of the network. This helps to increase decision-making capabilities and reduce response times.
Supermicro has made it easy to maintain the SuperEdge, as nodes and I/O connections are all accessible from the front. It can also operate in temperatures ranging from -5°C to 55°C in a variety of humidity and other environmental conditions. The SuperEdge features redundant power supplies and cooling fans to maintain uptime through servicing. All of this combined has the potential to reduce operating expenses and will allow businesses to deploy the server in harsh conditions and in locations where climate control is impossible.
The Supermicro SuperEdge features three hot-swappable nodes that can be populated with three PCIe 4.0 slots each This further adds to its flexibility, as users can outfit them with a range of different add-on cards to suit their needs and accelerate applications for edge computing use cases. Moreover, it supports multiple acceleration cards, including networking, FPGA, DPU, eASIC, and TimeSync options.
