Symantec has announced new solutions and integrations with VMware across its product portfolio as Symantec and VMware celebrate the milestone of more than 100 integrations between the two companies’ products. The newly announced integrations focus on improving visibility and control of virtual applications, reducing the performance impact of backup and recovery, achieving security and compliance in hybrid environments, and improving storage performance and availability.

Backup, Recovery, and Archiving Integrations
Symantec NetBackup 7.6, scheduled for release later in 2012, will include NetBackup Accelerator for VMware cloud infrastructure that Symantec benchmarks at up to 100 times faster during backup. According to Symantec, new NetBackup Instant Recovery will recover virtual machines 800 times faster than current solutions.

The Backup Exec 2012 V-Ray Edition gives architects a unified protection platform across mixed physical and VMware environments. Enterprise Vault, which is VMware Ready certified, manages and migrates “stale” data into archival storage to reclaim primary storage capacity. Enterprise Vault can be virtualized and is optimized for vSphere and VMware View.

Security and Compliance Integrations
Symantec Critical System Protection now supports VMware vSphere 5 with granular policy-based controls to protect and monitor the hypervisor, guest VMs and VMware vCenter Server. The solution enables organizations to identify server compliance violations and suspicious activity in real-time, limit administrative control, restrict network communications, and prevent file and configuration tampering.

Symantec Control Compliance Suite allows users to automate compliance assessment and reporting processes to identify risk and prioritize remediation activities across physical and virtual infrastructure. Symantec Security Information Manager (SSIM) and Symantec’s Managed Security Service (MSS) leverage the VMware vShield log management collector to identify and respond to threats that impact applications throughout physical and virtual infrastructure.

Symantec has announced an active beta program for Symantec Endpoint Protection 12, which includes VMware vShield Endpoint integration to deliver additional deployment options and offload critical security analysis from protected virtual machines to a dedicated virtual appliance.

Storage and Availability Management Integrations
The updated Symantec’s Dynamic Multi-Pathing for VMware integrates with Center Server and adds support for VMware vSphere 5 (support for vSphere 5.1 is forthcoming). Dynamic Multi-Pathing for VMware 6.0 improves SAN storage I/O performance and availability and provides visibility directly into the underlying storage.

Symantec also announced the beta version of its Cluster Server solution for VMware, which will provide organizations with high availability and disaster recovery for applications such as Oracle, SAP, Exchange, SQL Server and Apache running in virtual infrastructures. Cluster Server will provide automatic application failover between VMware virtual machines without compromising VMware capabilities like vMotion and Distributed Resource Scheduler.
