ActiveProtect by Synology: Streamlined, Scalable, and Secure Enterprise Data Protection Solutions
Synology has unveiled its new ActiveProtect series of data protection appliances, simplifying enterprise backup processes. The ActiveProtect line integrates hardware and software into a cohesive platform, offering businesses a one-stop backup, recovery, and management solution. It reduces the complexity and cost traditionally associated with enterprise-grade data protection.
The ActiveProtect lineup is built around a unified framework, consolidating various enterprise backup needs. It supports various workloads, from physical and virtual machines to databases, file servers, and cloud services like Microsoft 365. Most importantly, the platform includes advanced features like immutable backups, air-gap protection, and encryption, addressing modern cybersecurity threats. With support for up to 150,000 workloads or 2,500 global sites through the centralized ActiveProtect Manager console.
Synology’s offering also shifts away from traditional per-workload pricing models. Businesses can enjoy a predictable one-time cost structure, allowing them to back up as many workloads as their storage allows. The hardware’s efficiency bolstered this flexible pricing structure, leveraging global source-side deduplication to optimize storage and bandwidth usage.
The new series features three main appliances: the DP320, DP340, and DP7400. Each caters to specific organizational needs. These appliances promise fast deployment, intuitive management, and reliable recovery while maintaining comprehensive security protocols. Below is a quick rundown of each model.
DP320: Tailored for Small and Medium Enterprises
The DP320 is an entry-level appliance that provides an accessible yet comprehensive solution for smaller organizations. Equipped with an AMD R1600 dual-core processor and 8GB of RAM, it delivers consistent performance for businesses looking to secure workloads across multiple endpoints.
Pre-configured settings for disk partitioning and RAID arrays simplify deployment. This allows users to get started quickly and focus on safeguarding workloads like VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and various databases. The appliance supports up to 5TB of backup sources and ensures data reliability with features such as Btrfs checksum for self-healing and RAID-based error correction.
Regarding security, the DP320 includes immutable backups and write-once-read-many (WORM) storage for ransomware defense. An air-gap option further enhances protection by isolating backups from the network. For recovery, businesses can choose between whole-system, file-level, or virtual machine restoration to meet stringent Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).

DP340: Bridging Small and Medium Enterprises with Larger Workloads
The DP340 expands upon the capabilities of its smaller sibling, providing enhanced performance and storage capacity for growing organizations. With an AMD R1600 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a hybrid storage configuration—featuring 4 HDDs and 2 SSDs—it delivers a balance of speed and reliability. It is capable of protecting up to 14.5TB of backup sources.
This model introduces additional optimizations, such as leveraging SSD caching to accelerate backup-related processes. Like the DP320, the DP340 supports numerous workloads, including Linux environments, SaaS platforms, and Oracle databases. Regular disaster recovery drills can be conducted in a sandboxed environment, offering businesses peace of mind.
On the security front, the DP340 mirrors the DP320’s solid defense mechanisms, with immutability and encryption to safeguard against ransomware. Its flexible recovery options ensure continuity, whether restoring entire systems or individual files. The DP340 also features a 10GbE data transfer port, significantly reducing the time required for large-scale backups and recoveries.
