Synology is announcing the immediate release of their five-bay DS1513+ NAS for the SMB enterprise market that offers increased throughput, more redundancy and easy business application usage as enhancements over the DS1512+. Synology is also providing High Availability to prevent long instances of downtime as well as network load balancing to optimize storage across drives. With the Synology DS1513+, administrators have initial access to as much as 20TB of raw storage. However, they will also be able to scale out to 60TB of raw storage with the use of two eSATA ports on the rear of the machine.

While the design configuration on the reverse of the Synology DS1513+ resembles its sibling DS1512+, one update is that it now features four 1GbE ports instead of two. The DS1513+ also implements link aggregation that enables the use of all four Ethernet ports so that the NAS unit can reach speeds as high as 200MB/s write and 350MB/s read. Link aggregation also provides redundancy in the event of drive failure. The four Ethernet ports can also be configured for MPIO, iSCSI, increased throughput and network node redundancy. MPIO and High Availability had been features only available on RackStation devices from Synology. Adding on, as its sibling offered, the DS1513+ also features four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports and two eSATA ports.
For the added benefit to scale to growth, Synology offers the DS1513+ with the ability to scale out using the two eSATA ports, and for customization and cost savings Synology has designed the DS1513+ to accept both 2.5" and 3.5" SSDs and HDDs in screw-less bays. Organizations can add DX513 expansion units to the DS1513+ to increase the number of bays from five up to fifteen drive bays. This means that SMBs can start with 20TB and work up to 60TB as their storage growth necessitates.
